ELLO WISHLIST 2017
I've been using Ello for a year now and there are so many things I love about this space. The overall quality found in the creative community here is astonishingly high and I hope that stays the same in 2017. Social media plays such a big role in the lives of makers and artists. It's almost impossible to quantify the impact but we all know it's there. Exposure is a key ingredient in growing a small business and social media is a key tentpole in building brand recognition. The one area that seems to be lacking though, and Ello appears to be no exception, is actual engagement. For makers this is primarily measured in clicks to sites and shops.
For 2017, I'd like the geniuses over here to figure out a way to increase actual engagement, not just views, likes or shares. I believe that Ello can play a larger role in building product awareness for artists and makers alike, so here are some wishes for 2017:
1. A Marketplace: The #shop tag is great, but I'd love to see this taken a step further with an actual dedicated shopping experience, using post content. It would be great to see sub categories like art, jewelry, indie magazines (like @barenbrug Minimalissimo) fashion, furnishings, etc. I'd be happy to jump in and help get this started.
2. Ello Blog: I'm a fan of getting Ello's newsletters in my inbox and I think it's time for the Ello blog to become more of feature on the site. There needs to be a direct link to it that is highly visible. All of the newsletter content, with links to the artists, should reside on the blog, making it easier to find and discover new talent. It's a lot to manage, so perhaps inviting community admins to curate posts would make this easier.
3. Engagers: One small thing that might incentivize engagement is to create a second badge for the profiles of those who are active users. There's the green check for verified accounts; maybe a red check for engagement?
4. Partners: Since content is king, why not partner with other indie platforms to create more? The two that come to mind are Bigcartel and Vimeo. One for creating new shops and one for creating new content. a Ello x VIMEO challenge needs to happen.
That's my two cents. Looking forward to seeing what Ello does in 2017. In fact, I'm so committed to using Ello next year, I'm cancelling my Mailchimp account and will be posting my weekly newsletter here exclusively. Onward, you creative ponies!
