Last week, after a short and sadly untreatable illness, we had to say goodbye to our beloved black and white cat, Gustav. He was a beautiful, calm, loyal cat with an incredibly loving character, and we will miss him dearly. He was my companion from his birth right through to his death aged 15. I am heartbroken at his loss.
A few days after his final vet’s visit, to clear my head a little I took a long soak in the bath while reading Basho’s haibun ‘The Narrow Road To The Deep North’. When getting out of the bath I paused to sit on the edge, and was struck by the image of Gus’s body as it had lain on my lap after he had gone. In that moment I saw the patch of white fur on the back of his neck as the moon, as though reflected in a dark pond. We were bent over him like weeping willows reaching down to gently stroke the water’s surface.
Weeping willows mourn
the moon lost in a black pond.
A profound sorrow.
