the new barbie (original poem)
"look at me, i'm barbie!"
she tiptoes to excellent behavior
she waves her arms to be perfect
she twists to be elegant
she hops to find a prince
she wears her long dresses
and puts on plastic heels
because thats her dream
what happened to her?
somewhere along the way
she realized the flaw in her hopes
and turned to other things.
suddenly princesses were the enemy
because who wants to be like all the other girls?
perhaps the villain put a spell on her?
the princess world is carefree
because she, the one who is ever so ever so ever so perfect ever so elegant ever so courageous
knows only that she is happy.
validation becomes unnecessary
because as long as she's happy, that's all that matters right?
but the villain can change perception.
the villain is not even human
but somehow it enters the perfect girl.
he alters her wish
he lets her know the sitch
but it's all in her head.
they're not even different people.
now the same girl sits here
and looks back on the princess girl.
the girl before the villain took her.
things aren't all bad
she has new goals
ones that don't involve princess dresses and plastic heels
rather, they involve tasks that are eventually supposed to make her happy.
"future me will be happy," she tells herself.
but she is the future her.
time stops for nobody.
she continues to live
and a new second is a new her.
she talks as if time has paused
and suddenly her actions are compacted into a timeless warp of anxiety.
the princess didn't want this.
she would be quite disappointed
she would point her pretend wand
and tell her to find a new dress.
