Week 4: Research Assignment
Archan Nair -- "Beneath the Air". Digital and Mixed Media Illustration. (2014)
Archan Nair's art covers an array of mediums. "Beneath the Air" began with a process many of Nair's pieces follow. He says he starts by using watercolor or other types of paints to create a base, and then uses photoshop to paint digitally on top. He then prints it on a canvas, and then adds to it with acrylic paints, pens to create line work, 3D objects, scraps, and a lot of experimentation. His pieces are characterized by their bright colors, line work, and detail , as well as their surreal, whimsical feel. Each individual component feels purposeful and glides together. This piece to me is about nature. The girl is in a natural state, nude, and in a position that seems unpoised and natural. She blowing out air. Her surroundings are emphasized, as if saying reality is in the world and in the patterns, cycles, and elements that exist around us. We are all connected to reality. The air is leaving her body, and returning to the flow of flora and fauna that are flowing up from behind her. The surreal element of the work reminds the viewer that reality is not always seen. lf, but also the process of understanding what the true nature of reality is and how we are all interconnected with the patterns which exist all around us – living or non-living, seen or unseen.
