Breaking: CA Governor Jerry Brown Signs CalECPA into Law
In a move to modernize privacy protections for California citizens, governor Jerry Brown signed SB 178 CalECPA into law.
From the EFF release:
"CalECPA protects Californians by requiring a warrant for digital records, including emails and texts, as well as a user's geographical location. These protections apply not only to your devices, but to online services that store your data."
This is a huge step forward in extending the protections afforded by individual rights into the digital realm - something that (in theory) should be a given, but seems to be much more complicated in practice. Good job, California!
