@andreali asked me why I wanted to move my Relaxed Machinery (rM) Community focusing on Ambient Music and Creativity of all types... to Ello at @elloambient . The rM community launched in 2010 and was an extension of an earlier community started on Ning by me and friends in 2008. I answered privately but thought I'd share here.
Why Ello? Many reasons... Ning was failing (and it's worse now). Facebook is utterly worthless for a community. I thought about doing Wordpress / BBPress or possibly one of the cms's out there. Or possibly a product called Jamroom. HOWEVER - I don't need to be the IT person behind it all. So I ruled out all the roll your own options. Google is pretty much hated by all the Europeans so google+ which is going to fold at some point anyway I ruled out. Along comes Ello.
Ello is the first new network to jump up and completely speak to me. I "got it" right from the start. What Ello was trying to do and where it was going to go. I loved it. I suggested my less tech savvy friends join in they all hated it. The white screen of death. Nothing posted. They didn't get it. So I decided to wait a few months, watch development and update the community on it as things rolled out.
When Ning failed on me even more - I was locked out of Admin for about 2 weeks and all of the .png images suddenly shifted to much darker images - all of them. I posted when our yearly contract is up with Ning I'm not paying the $240 per year to renew.
And we're moving to Ello... even thought it's all not there yet - it will be. Trust me - and join in before we shut down in July.
Slowly people are trickling over.
Some are waiting for mobile. Some were waiting for search.
I'm very anxious for Ello Groups to roll out though that may not be this year. I'd connected with Justin / @cacheflowe as we're both musicians / label owners / geeks - and talked to him about wanting to move my community to Ello - and he put me in touch with @anna and @elloambient was born.
I love Ello because of the no ads and especially no data mining.
I love the actions taken by @budnitz @todd @lucian @gv @mk @jayzes @cacheflowe and the team.
I'm a big cheerleader for Ello - like I'm a huge cheerleader for ambient music.
I love Ello's huge images. I love the focus on Design. On Creatives. On Makers. On Musicians, Writers, etc. etc. etc... I loved how when something was broke - the devs had a solution rolled out in a week. I joined in the 2nd or 3rd wave after Ello "broke" as the "anti-facebook" (as media put it, not as Ello put it). I was hooked. It replaced Twitter for me. I was toying with Medium - dropped that.
Now it's convincing the people in my ambient community to commit to Ello - which I think most of them will. And - with it being @elloambient - that pulls it further away from my music label name - I've always tried to make the community separate from the label - but people will always see that name and assume I slant everything to my releases.
If i missed anything - just ask.
