Happy Tuesday ✌️
There’s a lot happening at Ello. I’d like to share a new home page experience with you that we’re calling “Editorialization” and ask for your feedback, remind you that Not For Print Issue, 02 sponsored by our partners at WeTransfer (@wetransfer) is now open for submissions, and let you know that very soon you’ll have the opportunity to have your GIF displayed in a museum of contemporary art. Per usual - we made Ello faster, and we’re giving away some more excellent art - specifically, a sold out print set and pin by @jamesjean.
Ello is Editorializing
What does that even mean? We are working on an all new home page experience to better communicate the value of Ello the platform and Ello the community. Our mission remains to put “creators first,” and provide creators with visibility, opportunity, and influence.
We’re doing a lot of things to fulfill these promises every day, but we’re not doing the best job of talking about how we’re doing them. For example, right now we are running a contest with WeTransfer for creators to have their work published in Not For Print, Issue 02 and ultimately on WeTransfer’s website. Three times per week we’re buying art from Ello creators and giving it back to the community. We’ve built tools that help you to get hired and collaborate with your peers and we’re currently iterating on an all new jobs offering. And there’s a lot more creator-focused features and experiences coming in the near future. But, as Ello exists today, our current homepage doesn’t do a great job of communicating all of these things and the collective potential they hold in aggregate.
We aim to solve this problem with a new “editorialized” homepage design experience. We intend to use this new editorialized space to highlight much of the brilliant work and ideas being shared on the Ello while better communicating all of the opportunities we’re providing creators.
Above you can see a screenshot from the start to our prototype. Nothing is clickable, but the layout should give you an idea of the direction we’re headed. Please keep in mind that this is also the simplest iteration of this experience, merely a starting place so we can get moving fast. We have a million ideas for different modules, layouts, etc., but we are keeping things light to start.
Here is the prototype. Feel free to leave comments on this post with your feedback. We’d love to read your thoughts and ideas. Oh, and the prototype isn’t scalable, so if it doesn’t fit on your screen try zooming out.
We look forward to you feedback.
Not For Print, Issue 02 — Resist is open for submissions
We’re off to a great start with NFP Issue 02. There are some amazing submissions rolling in from a stash of super talented creatives. We’re continually impressed. You have until April 21 to show us your work and earn the opportunity to be published in NFP 02. Learn how to enter here.
Your GIF in a Museum
Seriously. We’re partnering with the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art to present an International GIF Competition. Our talented team of artist curators will select the 20+ artists that best represent this year's theme (to be announced). Their work will be shown in the museum on two screens during the week-long event.
Watch for an Ello Announcement and email for further details on submission dates and the process for submitting. We cannot wait to see what our GIF community comes up with.
We made your following stream faster. Our measurements show close to a 50% improvement, depending on how many people you follow. Let us know how it feels.
Speaking of giveaways, here is what we have lined up for this week:
