Spenser the dog and I went for a long walk yesterday while we waited for the Subaru to get new tires. We are pretty lucky here in Medford MA, as we have lots of great outdoorsy places to go for being no more than a 20 minute drive to downtown Boston. There's always the Middlesex Fells, which is a pretty amazing stretch of wilderness that includes towers, reservoirs, mountain biking, etc, in over 2,200 acres with over 100 miles of trails. I use it quite a bit, especially when the weather gets better and I can go mountain biking.
But that's not the only outdoor treasure we have. One of our borders is the Mystic River, which we put to great use with boat launching, a boat club and a strong high school rowing team. Along its bank is the Torbert Macdonald Park / Mystic River Reservation, which is a really nice area, replete with walking paths and a cool tower.
While we waited for the car, we explored this park. We even went up the wooden tower and I took the above picture. It was a bit chilly but not too bad. Spenser worried me, because I kept thinking he was going to jump off at each landing, but we made it up and down safely. He just loves to run and he is such a home boy that I am confident he won't go too far. He stays about 20 to 50 feet in front of me, stopping all the time to make sure I'm still around. He flushed a rabbit, which gave him quite a run! He stayed busy the whole 2 hours we were that - not bad for a guy who will celebrate his 13th birthday in August! I even set my Fitbit walking record for the day.
