This is a sight which will shortly be lost to us forever - the last airworthy Avro Vulcan. It will cost in excess of £4m to service, so it will soon become a static museum exhibit.
My attitude is a little ambivalent - it's purpose as the delivery service for destruction is abhorrent to me, and it consumes way too much fossil fuel to be justified.
But the 10 year old inside me is sad to see this giant of the air being pensioned off. It was a real privilege to see it in action at Penarth this afternoon, and to have my chest cavity oscillate in sympathy with those four Rolls Royce Olympus engines as it powered past overhead.
