Roger Döring & Konrad Korabiewski - Komplex (2015)
This is another album I've been enjoying a lot recently - I feel a string of posts coming on sorry.
I was sucked in by this video. Something about the shuddering blurry landscapes accompanying the baritone sax piece really grabbed me.
The album is all sax and clarinet pieces (Korabiewski's bits) with some electronic interventions/treatments by Döring. The 8 tracks are largely of a piece with what you can hear above, sometimes with background sounds of street scenes and such. I really love the absence of huge washed out reverbs and echoes, which to me always seem like some kind of default option for electronic treatments of acoustic instruments. (I do love those things, of course, but just not all the time!)
On side B, 'Aber Langsam Gehe Ich Meinen Weg - Langsam' is a massive exception to the sound of the rest of the album. The liner notes give fair warning, bothering to list the instrumentation as "klarinette, diktaphon" because the effect of recording to dictaphone is that fucking massive. The muted brooding of other tracks is replaced here by massive slabs of noise, the whole thing distorted to buggery. I'm kinda ambivalent about this one on initial listens. It's fun to have a big shift in the colour of the music, but it's also pretty savage in an otherwise mellow record.
Komplex is vinyl-only. I ordered it from the label, Gruenrekorder, after being pleasantly surprised postage was only €3.50 to New Zealand. That's dirt cheap compared to ordering from the States or the UK.
