KALKI is the final Maha Avatar (great incarnation) of Vishnu who will descend to finish off the Kali Yug (Age of Kali) and kickstart a new cycle of time. Presided over by the demon Kali, the Kali Yug is a period of great strife, evil, chaos, and discord – shit’s basically a mess. After having previously incarnated as a giant boar, a merman, a colossal tortoise, and a lion-human hybrid, amongst others, Vishnu is predicted to keep it, relatively, chill this time and incarnate as a warrior who Lord Shiva will present with a pure-white, winged horse, a flaming sword, and….um….Shuka, a parrot that knows everything about the past, present, and future. Kalki will then proceed to engage in battle with the forces of chaos. (my earliest memory of being told this story included Kalki thundering down towards Earth on a rainbow bridge and his head being on fire. Not going to lie, I was disappointed to learn that it is just the sword that will be on fire. I mean, as harbingers of doom go, a sword wreathed in flames slicing through the air DOES do the job, but, in MY head, HIS head will always be on fire). For those of you wondering about Shuka, listen, when Lord Shiva, the Lord of Destruction, bestows upon you an omniscient parrot, it’s probably best NOT to ask questions – just accept it along with the other apocalyptic paraphernalia and get on with it.
