If my father were alive today I am not sure how he would have reacted today with the increased awareness of issues in mental health as a very serious problem in our lives and society as a whole. I remember, when I was young, asking him why he was in Maudsley Hospital London and why was he unhappy but typical of his generation his response was to shut me down, quite literally. Of course my youth and it’s insensitivity didn’t real help or grasp the reality intellectually only emotionally. I realise now that he needed help but just couldn’t or didn’t know how to reach out. It was painful and no one came out unscathed. The painting is a reflection of his inner state as I remember him many times. It is difficult to look at because it constitutes the man we knew. The women is Rosalind his wife and our mother. The post is not so much a promotion or the hijacking of someone’s suffering with questionable motivations which Instagram or social media in general is riddled with but a reminder to seek help if it really is all getting too much.
