I love walking here. It's a refuge that is attempting to restore the oak trees to this area. Behind her and over to the left out of view is an ancient stand of evergreens with a stream that runs through it. To the right there are smaller oaks and all around is a flat land where young native plants and oaks have been replanted. This tree is about 150 years old. She's the oldest in the area. She's the Old Mother Tree. The fence is there to protect her, but it seems wrong somehow. And the thing I've not described is that there are housing developments and apartments spread out beyond this refuge. So that would be the reason (in a manner of speaking) that she became an endangered species here. We encroached on her turf, but kept a little patch of land for people to enjoy what used to be here. So I guess I don't feel quite that bad that this reminds me of Joni Mitchell's song. Because yeah, we sorta took this tree and put her in a tree museum.
