EXCLUSIVE: Intro to INSPIRATIONAL 14
Personal Portraits – Personal Stories
This issue, like all issues of Inspirational, is special, but possibly this one more so than others. This is a significantly personalised issue, it even says so in the title: Personalised Portraits. This is an issue that has as its core the story of eight individual artists who have, do, and will continue to explore gender in its most significant way, through the intimate story of self.
We are always who we are as self, as true self. Our task, along our life path is always to find that true self, and then to learn to love that self. So many fail to find out who they really are, and even more find out that they end up hating their true selves, hiding that identity away, victimising and bullying others who share aspects of their truth in order to bury their true selves deep down, poisoning themselves and others along the way. This scenario is so often at the centre of so much bigotry and hatred, particularly when it comes to gender identity, sexual identity, honesty with self.
Most of us have been brought up, as have generations before us, with the notion that gender is a strictly binary deal, that it is set out at birth, defined and programmed, that nothing can change that, and nothing should.
But the definition between male and female, the impenetrable biological border that we are so often told exists in the practical, in the material, is not a border at all, not a wall, a fence, a gulf, a chasm – it is instead, a link, a connection. We are male and female, female and male. There is no one hundred per cent male or female, there never was. We are as individuals a kaleidoscope of gender, of sexuality, needs and wants, of desires and ambitions.
To see an individual is to see the story of that individual, which is forever unique. A complexity of humanity within the one vessel. The sooner we begin to understand and reflect that personal portrait of the individual, that personal journey, the sooner we will understand what it is to be truly human, truly self.
