INSPIRATIONAL 14: Background
I think it would be good, at this stage, to fill in some background as to how the theme for Inspirational 14 came about.
I was staying with the artist Stiofan O'Ceallaigh in Manchester at the end of last year. Whilst there he introduced me to the poet Louise Wallwein. I was fascinated by Louise. She was poised and purposeful, comfortable and calm. But listening to some of the episodes of Louise story, I soon realised that this was no easy journey, that the individual that Louise was now, the one sitting in front of me with her beautiful tailored suit and amazing quiff, had had an often painful and sometimes violent journey, but she had got to where she needed to be, and that was the important lesson.
So it got me to thinking about personal journeys, personal stories, which of course, all our lives are. I had always intended for Inspirational 14 to have a gender questioning theme, but the more I thought about Louise, the more I kept coming back to the more intimate theme of Personal Portraits associated with gender, and that stuck to Inspirational 14, and never become unstuck.
