In 1984 Steve McCurry photographed Afghan Girl with green eyes for National Geographic. In 1989 I photographed my Indian Gypsy Girl for SCAD. He went back to photograph her decades later.
I heard today that my Gypsy girl is now a grandmother and a lot older! I feel I need to return to India and do likewise. My dear friend Cletus Babu who guided me to his work with the Gypsy community in Tamil Nadu then is in the process to find out more about her and relay to me.
What was so wonderful was when a photo expert came to the opening of my exhibition and told me he felt my image was as if not more powerful than McCurry's. I had to smile as this would be the second photo that has beaten the Nat Geo photographers. The other was in Kenya but that is for another day. I have always adored Nat Geo work as we all have.
