I’ve been staring at this photo all day, trying to figure out what to say about it. It was under the same bridge over Bras d’Or and I knew from the spray paint over the restricted-area sign that there was going to be some counter culture painted on the walls on the underside. It’s sort of jarring to look at. Colourful, youthful, rebellious. And right in the center a symbol of hate. It’s hard to tell in this sort of context whether it’s really a message of anti-Semitism or just like the Krylon equivalent of swearing. Like fun to paint, screw the system, smoke a joint and none of it really means anything. But at the same time it is what it is, a symbol with a lot of history and a lot of harm. Canada isn’t separate from the history of WWII. The government turned away thousands of Jewish refugees during the rise of the Nazi regime in the 1930s. Worth thinking about, especially as more refugee crises rise around the world.
Catch me on the gram.
