We pulled off the highway to set up camp in an abandoned quarry site. We’d been fighting the wind all day and were ready to call it. The flat gravel seemed as good a place as any. Bit less windy, not much. The shadows stretched over the tent before I even had it set all the way up, and right after dinner I told Asad we had to climb up onto the rocky cliffs above us to shoot the sunset.
Best call all day. The wind was still blowing and the temperature had dropped, but the chill disappeared in the view of Newfoundland’s coastal rock, the remnants of the Appalachians that once ruled the east coast. Moss and lichen and spruce all lit up with the setting sun. I could have stayed up there for hours, but the sun wasn’t long-lived. We photographed and headed back down to climb into our sleeping bags.
