a poem i shared with a boy who didn't care
I used to feel ashamed
Of the places I have been
And the feet that have carried me there.
I have realized
That our lives are far too short
To worry about every side track.
I could run for hours
With this idea fueling me:
That we are worth more than we are packaged.
Sure, I have regrets,
But this skin has felt the warm sand
Of a beach fourteen hundred miles away.
These eyes have memorized
Rushing rapids and the mountains
In a state I dream of living in.
I have to buy new shoes now,
Because these feet are soon to wander
A foreign city five hours ahead of me.
Within myself, I am nothing.
But when I look beyond myself,
I find everything.
I realized a heart covered in scars
Proves to someone else
That deep wounds heal.
This fragile shell I live in
Will only be worth its dirt
If I step beyond myself.
The feet that have carried me here
Are nothing to be proud of,
But of this understanding I am proud.
