I like these lonely desert highways. I don’t know exactly why. Maybe its growing up in Alaska, after all these years this kind of terrain still feels foreign. Alien. Exciting. Anything could be around the corner. These landscapes inspire my imagination, fuel my senses and feed my soul. I like to drive around out here with the windows down and no real goal or destination. Pull over and watch the clouds roll by below the jet-stream and the way the light filters through them. Listen to the wind and watch the small desert birds and larger hawks hunting for snakes or rodents. Maybe the rare passing car or truck. Rare. In these silent moments you can feel connected to all that is or all that ever was. If you listen close enough.
Sometimes I’ll take folks on a shoot out here. They always ask how I find these places. I just like to drive around and explore, I say. It’s true.
I like these lonely desert highways. A lot.
