Working on another fun piece for this year's Crazy For Cult show at Gallery 1988. I chose a cult film that is near and dear to me, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and here's a little window into my process.
The first image features the finished line drawing ready to be transferred to a wood panel and painted. I'll do another post documenting the final piece once it's 100% completed!
The second image represents my initial research snapping screen grabs of key scenes and researching original artwork by Ralph Steadman. During this stage I made the decision to avoid the bucket hat and the "bat country" scene entirely, since most artwork you can find depicts this iconic scene. I didn't want to just homage (or rip off) Steadman either, preferring to make this piece my own somehow.
The next image shows my rough thumbnail stage, just getting loose with a pencil, and working out some likenesses and layouts. One of those thumbnails ended up being pretty close.
Next I decided to make a movie poster-esque collage of scenes and elements from the movie, so I started making finished parts that could be arranged into my final layout. I developed the characters and details as I went.
