Project 1 Submission: The Aero•Scope
Artist Statement: The Aero•Scope is a portable desktop air purifier. It consists of an interior structure and an exoskeleton. The material used was birch plywood, which was then joined together with wood glue to form the final product. Its mechanism consists of two computer cooling fans and a carbon air filter to remove particulates from the air. The inspiration for the form factor of the piece was a periscope. Periscopes are found in playrooms and nuclear submarines, and bounce light through a series of mirrors. The Aero•Scope does with air what a periscope does with light. The exoskeleton was inspired by the Chinese National Stadium in Beijing, which was designed to mimic the mesh of a bird's nest. The exoskeleton was painted blue with a rough finish to contrast the wooden structure underneath, and the logo on the back panel exhibits the Aero•Scope logo. The Aero•Scope is a modern, utilitarian piece that brings the benefit of cleaner air to a workspace.
