This one might take some explaining...
One night in the mid-1990s I embarked with a small group of friends to Video Express, the local rental outlet for esoteric fare of all sorts. We rented 2 movies that night that stained my brain. I selected Man Bites Dog from the box on the shelf alone, and it remains a favorite to this day. Someone else picked Urotsukidoji - The Legend of the Overfiend. My exposure to anime at this point consisted of Astro Boy, Akira, Ranma 1/2 and a few others.
As the years went by and the internet exposed me to more, I learned that tentacles figured into anime and manga on some 'erotic' basis. While it wasn't a proclivity of mine, the imagery of Urotsukidoji stuck in my back-brain for some time.
By the mid-2000s I'd been using toy parts to mod Polaroid cameras for some time, accumulating several tentacles and tails from various figures. I'd graft an appendage onto an old electric toothbrush, prototyping a line of parody 'marital aids' called Otaku Friend, complete with a hilarious mascot proclaiming "Let me agitate your excitable parts" and other bizarre messages.
The name was inspired by Ichi The Killer, if I recall a scene with gangsters correctly, referring to a magazine called Yoga Friend that was contortion-themed. One X-mas in a work gift exchange I received a 'Mouse-sager', a vibrating device shaped like the peripheral. I set to work grafting parts onto it in short order.
Most of the tentacles have a wire inside so they can be bent and posed like Gumby. There are two claws with articulation, above the face at the end and at the end of the large green one. It runs on AA batteries, and has never been tested as a personal massage device. The tusk makes for an effective handle if one wants to hold it like a gun. There's a cavity on the underside that once held another tentacle, removed to make it less unwieldy and to re-purpose the tentacle in another project.
Otaku Friend 2000, perhaps?
Has anime influenced your creativity in such a manner? Or if not in this manner, perhaps a substantially less creepy one?
