Julia Kwon, Like Any Other: No. 52 (Red States, Blue States), Silk, thread and wood, 25” x 24” x 7”, 2018 © Julia Kwon
I've been using a lot of red and blue and disrupting the patchwork bojagi to not only celebrate my cultural background, but also challenge preconceptions people may have based on my gender and ethnicity. By commenting on the political divisions and collisions in the U.S. as well as the North and South Korean peace talks, I aim to shift the focus from the search for authentic origins and clear categories to the uncertainties of translation and complexities of globalism, transnationalism, hybridity, and intersectionality.
This and other newest works will be shown in my exhibition "Authentic Hybridity" at Korean Cultural Center in DC until February 22nd. Also, the reception for "Over, Under, Forward, Back" at Arlington Arts Center has been rescheduled to Saturday, February 9th from 6PM to 9PM. Hope to see you there!
