All paintings are acrylic on canvas.
I started painting as a grafitti artist, however, converted to acrylic painting in 1999. I am Portuguese and live in Lisbon. I have held several exhibits in Portugal, but also in Belgium, as I completed a Masters degree in Bruges.
I created these paintings because I started becoming more and more preocupied with the current state of western democracies, where its becoming harder to detect "fake news", albeit, people seemingly do not care if news is real or fake. Power in democracies was seen as a source of legitimacy, or the source of legitimacy (votes) is what gave power to the authorities, at least in a perfect world. Despite cinics being able to say that this state of perfection was never achieved, what is obvious is that the state has more ways of restricting our freedom than ever before, such as through increased survaillance. Nevertheless, the conundrum of today is that survaillance is also needed to assure our security and ultimately, our freedom, due to the lack of security that is generally perceived. The main question is, however, is to what extent is public opition becoming apatic to the implicit trade-off between security and freedom. These works explore the tie between the power of the state or other power structures such as the church, its essencial, albeit also paternalistic role in society, and how it relates directly with its subjects.
