Whenever I find a song that I really like, my inclination is to listen to it on repeat for an hour. But, I hesitate, worried that I am going to ruin it by playing it out. I've decided that's dumb, and here's why.
When you initially like a song, or an album, you'll never like as much as you do in that moment. There is no way to capture the feeling that's in your chest from a great song and make it last. It's there, and then it's gone. So, trying to extend that feeling is futile.
If you really, really love the song or the album, you'll listen to it forever. You won't be able to play it out over the long arc of your life because you'll love it. That feeling in your chest will return once or twice a year, but for different reasons. (The song His N Hers by Pulp often suddenly gets stuck in my head and I have to listen to it on repeat. I've never played it out.)
If you don't really love the song and it's just a song that connects at that moment, then you better listen to it as much as possible because the feeling will never ever be the same.
