This is Loowit. In the time before, she was a beautiful woman, and two great chiefs vied for her hand. The fighting went on for many years, tearing families apart and wasting many young lives. Long story short, her father finally put an end to the quarrel with his powers, and in the end Loowit was transformed into this mountain. Some time later a group of white men wished to honor one of their ship’s officers, and gave her that officer’s last name. Today most folks call her Mount St. Helens.
