Kassia Marina Rico lives and work in Los Angeles, California, and holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. She works with painting, drawing, and illustration. In her minimal works, she lightly places soft tones next to impossibly vivid colors, deconstructing the physical plane into compressions of space, shadows, edges and texture. Her works examine themes around contemporary american life and nature, dreams and memory, trauma and healing. Rico’s work is firmly rooted in drawing. She explores the spontaneity of line work, graphic shapes and color to translate the mundane with a playful yet mature visual language.
These are 3 of 9 illustrations in her recent series highlighting powerful women at various moments of physical activity. Tennis, above, boxing, soccer, MMA and other activities like weightlifting are represented. This series examines how Strength and Physical Power is innately within the female body and specifically the desire to challenge the archaic representations of female and aesthetic beauty. Playful shapes and colors inform, but also undermine, reclaiming the subject from patriarchal discourse.
