Here's a peak at the new exhibition that just opened on Alcatraz from Ai Weiwei...
@Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz
“The misconception of totalitarianism is that freedom can be imprisoned. This is not the case. When you constrain freedom, freedom will take flight and land on a windowsill.”
— Ai Weiwei
It's in collaboration with the the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Park Conservancy - which makes me pleased to no end. Not only do we get to contribute to a service in dire need for all of our funds, you get to see Ai Weiwei's latest work in a truly unique environment. With vistas of the SF skyline from bridge to bridge, Alcatraz is both haunting and beautiful all at once. Weiwei created artworks specifically for this space, drawing on it's rich, troubled history.
With pieces like Stay Tuned, Trace and Yours Truly, Ai Weiwei once again combines art with activism in a uniquely powerful way, with an exhibition that promises to resonate in a grand and impactful way. Large, indeed.
