My work focuses on hidden lives, vulnerability, and heartbreak. I work with objects that break people’s hearts, and use textile materials and processes to create wall hangings or sculptural pieces. The objects I use in my work are items which embody negative memories or emotions. They are no longer wanted, but which are filled with too much sentimental value to sell or donate to charity.
This work sheds light on topics which are rarely spoken about publicly, if at all. I work closely with the people who have donated the items, interviewing them about their experiences to create the space for them to learn about the object and themselves, and ensuring that I’m accurately conveying their experiences through the pieces.
By deconstructing and honouring these objects, I intend to create a sense of awareness and relatability for viewers who might have had similarly isolating and challenging experiences. The labour of the processes used to break apart the items and transform them is akin to the emotional labour of healing and closure
