Oh life, you have come for me now
and you have come hard.
Just when I gather my feathered nerve to fight you,
to curse the temptation to succumb to your sickness,
I pound outside to the middle of the street,
ready to tread, to pounce, to brave your theft;
to tend my wailing companion who knows all too well what knocks behind my door
while he has drawn his closed.
Oh, the next time life speaks, persistent and generous in her temper;
the next she comes calling with songs of sadness from across my street,
I will swift be going.
I won't stiffen my legs, waiting for my heart to hear.
I'll be going and we will be praying in blended tongues for her child.
And for mine.
