Images 1-3 are of an immersive video installation called 'Nonbinary' wherein I created a cloud of mirrors which onto which were projected societal expectations of ‘masculinity’ and ‘femininity’ from opposing sides of the room. These images were shattered by the mirrors, and thrown around the gallery, swimming as the shards rotated with the movement of air from the crowd. The fragmented combinations of 'masculine' and 'feminine' imagery were endlessly shifting, and as they played on the audience and the walls, the meaning I hoped to convey was of gender fluidity and how our personality traits are as unique to us as individuals, the possible combinations being as infinite as those dancing around the room.
Images 4&5 are of an installation called 'Colors', which was an exploration of natural light transforming a static installation into a dynamic experience. As the sun shifted through the sky, the colorful shapes projected by each pane of acrylic shifted through the room. The experience of this installation changed by the minute, tying an unnatural material in an unnatural space to the elemental nature of the sun.
Images 6&7 are of a sculptural piece called 'Flow'; part of a series of art works I have created using shattered glass. While each shard of glass is randomized in shape, I arrange them so they come together into a cohesive design. The glass shards are affixed to a glass background, creating a sense of suspension within the wooden frame.
Bio: I [Kevin Hallagan] am a Los Angeles based artist who has worked on art installations exhibited around the world. I am quite introspective, always have been, and gay [ALSO always have been]. I grew up, as many of us do in the LGBTQ+ community, with a lot of confusion and uncertainty relating to myself and my surroundings. This confusion, combined with my introspection, created in me a tendency to see symbolism in everyday experiences, which has definitely influenced my path as an artist. I aim for my art to demands of its viewers an active engagement with their surroundings, and a mental consideration of its content. I want my art to inspire people to look at their own worlds with curiosity and inferred significance as I do mine. Regarding my artistic style, I prefer to allowing each new concept to inform its design, allowing me to employ a variety of techniques and mediums. My work takes significant research and each piece influences the next.
