I've started exploring different dance styles with Babette... we've watched a lot of classical ballet, some hula, and today we watched several Irish step dancing videos. I love the beauty and the cultural variety in these different dance forms, and I also love the different body types on display. Ballet is notorious for prizing slenderness to the point of condoning eating disorders. Hula, on the other hand, is performed by people of all sizes. The step dancers I've seen thus far are fairly slim, but the costumes don't always emphasize slimness -- one of the troupes wore heavy, sequined, long-sleeved outfits. I'm grateful to YouTube for allowing me to expose Babette to ideals of beauty that are different from what she sees in Toys R Us.
