the cooks and the execs.
(kreddible trout - 2010)
Up here in more sensible lands things never got quite as primal. More maple syrup, less guns, maybe? Who's to say, but it never quite got as... visceral up here. After the Great Topple when everything fell, the executives, the smart ones anyway, came down to work in the kitchens. Seeing all the lynchings on the Real New News with it's stadium seating vengeance they knew they had to disappear quick into common worlds. Some of them swept sidewalks. Some of them pumped the gas til it ran out. Some of them ended up down here with us. They didn't know what the hell was going on. They didn't have a clue what to do or how to understand it all. Raw meat freaked em out. Animals. A lot of them became vegetarians. Some of them died because of this. They struggled, they tried, some of them, but in everything they did, in all their actions, you could tell they felt above it. They didn't want to get their hands dirty. We knew how. We knew & those first few years, when things were scattered chaos... we were the masters. We had power. Like in anything there was the hazing & the mockery and in many places they were just thrown out to the streets. Not too often though. Those times, those days, there was a certain... universal sympathy, I guess, that seemed to help everything not go fully bat-shit crazy up here. Didn't take long for the lynchings to slow down and calm began to settle in. It had to really. People realized revenge wasn't going to put food in their hands so some kind of society reappeared. But man, we were masters. The execs were in their place. Soon though, they got hungry again. The kind of hungry that started the whole mess to begin with. We were too dumb to notice it. Really. We're just not cut out for that cutthroat world. Not that one anyway. Soon they moved up past us again. They knew how to talk, boy! We didn't see it happening. It's like, one day we went out for a smoke, came back, and they were all managers and owners again. They were the bosses again & we never saw it coming. There's a whole plane of existence that we just never see in operation where these slimy creatures maneuver & deal. We never saw it. At least they were out of our hair though, and more, they knew what we knew; that they were weak and hopeless in any real world. They would never survive the real shit if that sympathy wasn't there. If we didn't take 'em in. They knew we knew that & they didn't like it. Hated it. It weakened their power and soon enough they just fired the lot of us. All of us that knew what they were but more importantly, how to do the job... were fired. 'Outsourced', 'downsized' ...whatever. The lever to the trap door under us was pulled and we all fell so predictably. When they were down here, we put them in their places & they just went and put us out on ours. Out on our asses. All we had to do, though... was wait it out. All we had to do was have smirking patience because within the year, they all starved to death. They left themselves with no one to cook for them. When we came back that's when this world began making some kinda real sense & no one ever wanted to be the boss ever again.
