READING YOUR WRITING ALOUD IS EVERYTHING.
Here is a little story for you. I started polishing the final draft of The Badlings (my latest novel) according to my editor's notes, and about 30 pages in got stuck over this one paragraph that just didn't sound right. So I read it aloud. Then I remembered that I should've done it from the very beginning, so I went back to page 1 and read aloud all 30 pages again.
I fixed so many things, I can't tell you. It sounds different when spoken, and it's easier to pick out things that are "off." As a result I now have a sore throat and I'm only 50 pages into this draft, essentially doing not a polish but a full-blown Draft 5 that will take me a week or more to finish.
But it's worth it because it will make the final product shine.
