Lately I’ve been employing a new trick. When editing, I read aloud, but now I have added something else. I imagine I read aloud to a room full of kids. I tell you, that very quickly lets me spot the places that might make no sense to them or that they might immediately poke holes in (“But on the previous page the bunny was pink! Why is it blue now?”). I read aloud each sentence until I “see” the children’s eyes sparkle with delight, and then I move on to the next sentence, and the next, and the next.
