Have started reading this little gem of a book about rare words. If you're a word nerd like me, you will love it. It's written by Irish lexicographer Diarmaid Ó Muirithe, and it contains curiosities like:
Adamite (naked in public), alfratch (scoundrel), arse-verse (a spell written on a house to prevent it from burning), barm (a woman's lap), bleaze (bladder), and bowssening (to cure of madness by half-drowning), to name a few. It's organized by the alphabet, and I have just gotten to C. Love the way it's written, the wit, the humor, and the abundant references to Shakespeare (who invented a trillion gazillion words).
