The ballet choreographer in my book is a mean ratty woman who was nicknamed "the Rat" by the dancers. Only they're Russian so the nickname is in Russian. "Krysa." Yesterday I was reading the new chapter to @roycedaniel and changed it to "the Rat." He said I should keep "Krysa" even though American readers won't get what it means. (Maybe I will explain it in the beginning of the book, like in a little glossary.)
I don't know. What do you think? If I follow my own advice ("Write for yourself."), then I should keep "Krysa." Because to my ear it sounds like that's exactly that that awful ratty woman is. But when I get scared and think my readers won't get it, I think it should be "the Rat."
