It’s annoying to learn the craft secrets. I mean, I love it, but lately when I open a new novel, I know so many things upfront, I can spot mistakes right away. It’s harder to read just for pure enjoyment. For example, whatever characters are mentioned in the first chapter, I know will come into major play, and are possibly related, as family ties make for better conflict and bestselling authors use this device all the time. THAT MAKES ME PREDICT MOST THINGS THAT WILL HAPPEN. It’s its own fun, of course, but just not the same fun I used to have when reading books without this knowledge. Oh, the curse. Shoot me.
