I’m learning the history of the world through the history of words.
For example, shuck (v.) came from shucking corn. Other meanings include stripping clothes and cheating. But it also dates back to black slaves singing while shucking corn in the fields. Their evasiveness (not being truthful to themselves) served as protection from the whites, it was something they had to adopt to survive, in other words, they had to put on a protective skin, hence the meaning of the phrase “to be shucked out,” or to be stripped of your true “skin” like an ear of corn. Fascinating. Fascinating and painful.
