Have been drinking from faceted glasses like this one my whole life (well, my Russian part of life) and didn't know that they originated (it's not proven, but that's the theory) under Peter the Great in the town of Gus-Khrustalny (Chrystal Goose in Russian). The reason for facets is to stop the glasses from rolling off the table on the ships. And the modern glass was designed by Vera Mukhina, the sculptor who made the Soviet monument "Worker and Kolkhoz Woman." Well then. Live and learn.
