Did you know that to articulate originally meant "to separate (meat) into joints"? So effectively when you articulate, you peel meat off the bones. Think about that. If the job of a writer is to articulate the images that visit their imaginations as clearly and as precisely as possible, they have to separate the meat from the bones and present you with a complete anatomical (and bloody) picture of the story. I think it's my new favorite word.
