A huge slice of life, this book. Just finished reading it. 653 pages! So many characters, so many lives intertwined, it's astounding they came from one mind. No wonder USSR tried to prevent the publication of this book. It's Russian history through the eyes of people, with all its ugliness and chaos and ridiculous romanticized beliefs.
I found myself starting and stopping with this book. Some moments were beautiful, some were dull, and some ideology of that time rubbed me wrong and I had to set the book aside, but it's an epic and I'm glad I persevered. I have actually never read it in Russian. Plus, the poems at the end are beautiful.
