ARTIST STATEMENT: Project 1
My piece is about the hierarchy of desires for an average American girl. I asked several of my female friends what their desires were; the desires could be as broad as “happiness”, or as specific as “a new pair of jeans”. Most of the answers that I gathered revolved around feminine beauty, social acceptance, and building a family. To create my piece, I scanned several objects and textures of which I thought represented the my friends’ aspirations, and created a digital collage on Adobe Photoshop. To convey a hierarchy, I created a throne made out of my friends’ desires. I chose a throne to display their desires because of how idealized and important these desires are in the minds of young women across America. It seems as if many women go about their entire lives trying to reach these aspirations, and that they believe they cannot reach happiness until they achieve what is sitting on the throne. Therefore, sitting on the throne is the most significant and prominent desire among the girls that I talked to: the want to fit into the beauty standards of the American society. This is represented by lipstick. The lipstick is wrapped in white cloth to satirically comment on the contradictory standard for women to be beautiful and cheerful, but also pure and submissive.
