A sad farewell to Gough Whitlam. In 3 years his government achieved so much, medicare, free uni education, prevented drilling in the Great Barrier Reef and established the first marine park, independence for PNG, welfare payments for single mum's and the homeless, indigenous land rights, end of conscription and the end of the death penalty. I could go on.
I remember learning about the purchase of Jackson Pollock's "Blue Polls", for $1.3m. It caused such a stir at the time as it was modern art and it was expensive, 2 things Australia apparently didn't do. Thanks to him we also have a national gallery.
We are struggling in this country with a government that claims we are in financial crisis, but they seem to be the ones creating it. In the process they also seem to be dismantlement nearly everything that this man built.
