Last year, I read about how restrictive abortion access is in PEI, how years of contrarian and archaic provincial law got in the way of ensuring women, people, had access to abortion, and therefore agency over their own bodies.
The takeaway was grim as women's rights group planned a lawsuit the PEI government - a Liberal party, in case anyone forgets that misogyny exists on every part of the political spectrum - was likely going to fight and drag out for years.
A "Liberal" party in name, though conservative in action. And like virtually ALL conservatives, bigoted, wasteful (don't forget: that conservatives are better with money is a MYTH), and utterly, disgustingly patriarchal. (Yes, left leaning parties can be, and often are, shitty too.)
So imagine my joy when I read that last week, the PEI government, facing a losing legal battle that could potentially sap it dry... caved. And now people in PEI could have actual publicly funded abortion access by year's end.
Make no mistake: PEI women, PEI anyone-with-a-uterus, have a battle to wage still. "Pro-lifers" are prominent and well funded in PEI, and bigots from elsewhere, Canada and beyond, will condemn the move. But a victory is a victory.
Remember: abortion access is not a debate. People's agency over their own bodies is not a debate. It's 2016. Let's, as a species, grow the fuck up, and not force people to sue their own governments over this.
