Hey! I’m Francena Ottley, a New York based Installation Artist and Photographer. My work focuses on empowering women of color and providing a platform for them to be unapologetically themselves and share their experiences of being women of color in today’s society. All of my installations are hand done by myself and include mediums such as photography, video, sculpture, embroidery, painting, and more.
As guest curator for Black History Month, I want to highlight artists who are up and coming as well as artists who’ve paved the road for us new ones. I find it very important for young black artists to know who has came before us because it allows us to understand our history. I want to highlight artists of all different mediums and show that there is so much variety. I also want to focus on artists who are visual activists. As artists there’s an importance to the work we make and an importance to sending a message with our work.
Hope everyone will enjoy what’s to come, I’m excited and honored to be a curator for such an important month.
