Things I learned on podcasts today 9/25:
Thomassons are infrastructure in cities that have no purpose (they may have earlier in their lives) but are still maintained. Named after baseball player Gary Thomasson who in the height of his career was signed to a japanese baseball team, where he then went on to totally strike out and fuck up and just sat on the bench for an entire year collecting that $$$$$$$$. His family does not approve of the word but w/e honestly.
Orange. What came first? The fruit or the color? The fruit! The name for the fruit came about via passing thru many languages throughout many years. The word for the fruit, something like aranje or something weird like that was very similar to a city in the south of france (I think...somewhere in Europe) where the first Man of Orange (I don't remember if the first guy was actually called the Duke of Orange so I'm going to go with Man because it was a man who eventually went on to be the beginning of lineage of the House of Orange) lived. So they just kind of coincidentally sort of blended and the fruit became called the Orange.
The word for the color ORANGE only came about fairly recently, before it was described as "red-yellow"
MPDG: Dude that coined the term now hates it because it went from a way to call out sexism in movies where a quirky girl saves a depressed loser dude from himself. Then it was misused and basically became a sexist term in itself etc.
Discombobulated is an AMERICAN word. Does not stem from anything really at all. Was apparently used when people were making fun of affluent people and the way they spoke. Pretty sick. Edit: Also only word to have "bob" in the middle of it. Skibobbing, applebobbing do not count sorry.
THAT'S PRETTY MUCH IT! I marathoned Lexicon Valley for like two hours and then listened to an episode of 99% Invisible. Earlier I listened to an episode of Political Gabfest but it's kind of hard to write about what I learned from that...it's less factual more discussion-based. I listened to two episodes of the BBC's Global World News and learned that we are all completely fucked especially anyone in Sierra Leone and the Middle East. Also apparently a bunch of Boko Haram surrendered in Nigeria after a conflict in a major city in northern Nigeria, Maiduguri. This has not been confirmed though. In that conflict, the man (Mohammed Bashir) posing as the leader (Abudakar Shekau) died. So that's some good progress there. Hope it's true! That is it, good bye.
