And if you needed me, for anything, I would know that, too.
The words bring tears to her eyes. Another glimpse of her Mihai, real and standing before her. She nods. "Yes, to all of it. I think that would be good. Tomorrow? Or when you are in Ealdwic next?"
Maya looks up at him. "Things will be different now," she says with a reassuring smile, "but that's not a bad thing. That is my promise to you." She moves quickly toward the door before she can change her mind. Before she says too much. She picks up her bag and slips on her shoes. She turns the handle of the door and looks back at him.
He's standing there looking at her like the sad tall boy who doesn't want to be left alone. It guts her. She wants so badly to turn around and take the few steps across the room back to him. Her throat aches as she says, "Nos vemos pronto, Mihai. Thank you for all of this, for everything."
As the door closes, Adela appears. "I'm going with her," she says. "Say goodbye to that horrible cat of yours for me."
She looks at the drawing Maya had clutched in her hand when she'd first arrived. It sits on the counter. "Ah, I remember this," she says. "Boy, did she ever love you."
Drifting through the door Adela smiles over her shoulder. "She still does, you know. There may be hope for you yet, Mihai Stroi. Hasta la vista, burro."
