So I've been playing with Ello for a few days now. I gotta say, it's bringing me back to the day of LiveJournal and I kinda like it.
I started my LiveJournal back in 2001 (!!) and I can't believe I still keep that sucker up. It has records of my beloved radio days, the Christmas I spent crawling through ceilings at Carleton to rewire the media rooms, graduating (finally), teaching, CBC Radio, the Ottawa Xpress, TV Ontario film awards, near death food poisoning with Jeffy, many (many) days and nights over at @djleslie's Bank Street loft (I love you Leslor), spending days in maximum security in the hopes of giving a voice to writers in prison, Tuesday nights (oh so many Tuesday nights), blue / red / purple hair, Record Runner, DJing, Tony (I still miss you), speech writing, being so so lucky to work for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervisedinjection_site">SIS, winning the job lottery prompted my move to Switzerland, first orangutan hugs in Borneo, the passing of my mom, the birth of my children, the almost passing and miraculous recovery of my dad, and on and on and on.
It's an amazing record of my life and there are days when I can spend hours going through the entries (man, I have done some crazy sh&*").
And despite the explosion of places like Friendster (oh my gosh Friendster), MySpace, WordPress, Blogger, and Facebook I've always stayed loyal to LJ. Yep, even with its many iterations and clunkiness, I am so sentimental about it. My history keeps me there.
And while I suspect the similarities to LJ may disappear from Ello (maybe?) I'm curious if this will become another place that's capable of recording so much of someone's history. Or will it become something else to someone else.
I'm not sure what it's going to turn into for me. But I do like the interface and the fact that it lends itself thoughtful entries (for now).
xo to you Ello.
